Windows 10 clean install keep drivers free download.Start fresh with a clean installation of Windows 10

I am planning on doing a clean reinstall of Windows 10 on my computer in the near future. But I have read some things of people having trouble with it and having to manually reinstall all of their drivers.

My question is if I do do a clean install, will it remove my drivers and make me have to manually reinstall them? Or will it just automatically reinstall them with Windows? A clean install by definition overwrites whatever is currently on the drive, so anything that isn't backed up will be lost.

Windows includes hundreds probably thousands of drivers that it automatically installs. These are known as 'native drivers. If Windows doesn't have a native driver you can install a driver from the hardware manufacturer's website.

These are known as third-party drivers. You can install a third-party driver for your hardware even if Windows has a native driver. If you're thinking of a clean install, you can always go to the hardware manufacturers' websites in advance and download the driver installers.

Store them on a USB flash drive, along with a text file that explains what each driver is and how to install it. That's what I did for my clean install. My own USB flash drive has all the drivers and firmware I've ever installed, with complete information about each one. I never have to worry about where to find drivers or what to do with them. It's all there waiting for me. Was this reply helpful?

Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. A clean install erases the hard disk, which means, yes, you would need to reinstall all your hardware drivers. Windows 10 comes with what are class drivers for basic hardware support, but you will likely need to install updated drivers either through Windows Update or from the manufacturers website.

Learn how to do that at the following link:. How to: Install and Update drivers in Windows One thing you could do in advance is backup your hardware drivers, see the section of the following article how backup drivers: Back Up and Migrate Drivers to a New Windows 10 Computer.

Another option you can use if you don't want to go through the chore of reinstalling drivers is Reset. It performs a clean install while preserving your drivers. Learn more:. For example, many new Dells come with 20GB of free Dropbox space, which is a pretty great deal. If you use Office , you can download and install Office once again afterwards. The same goes for any other application that requires a key or authorization.

You can still use another method, explained below, to do this on the Anniversary Update. This window explains exactly what will happen. Run Windows Update—it should run automatically, anyway—and your computer should hopefully download all the hardware drivers it needs.

An earlier version of this feature is also available on the Anniversary Update. To get started, open the Settings app from your Start menu.

The page provides more information about the process. Either way, all your installed programs are removed and your settings are reset. It then begins the installation process, giving you a fresh Windows 10 system—no manufacturer bloatware included.
